Sodium Hydroxide is lye (caustic soda, DRANO etc.). Generally, causes the
oils in your flesh to turn to soap...hence a slippery feeling when handling
the stuff. A part of the process is the "defatting" of the skin, for lack of
a better way of saying it, chemical burns , which can be nasty. Also, there
is a BIG difference between 1 and 5% concentration. I'm sure Castrol is
protecting their recipe from the competition.
