The dial indicator suggestion is good, but, since the lobes don't wear
at the same rate, you can usually tell just by turning over the engine
with the starter and looking for a difference in the amount the rocker
moves. OTOH, if it has a Cat converter, it may have fried and be
obstructing the exhaust - sorta like the old "potato up the tailpipe"
gag. I'm presuming it's not a belt drive SOHC, for if it is, the belt
may have jumped a tooth but you could visually look at the cam and
wouldn't be asking. On MGs, the advance in the Lucas distributor freezes
if you don't oil it as recommended and you get the same symptoms.
