Uh, pardon me?  You can replace the main bearings without pulling the
engine.  The top main bearing shells can be rotated out of their pocket. 
You just give a little tap on the end without the tab to get it started,
then keep it going around the journal until it's out.  The new shell goes
back in the same way.

For the front main bearing cap, you have to remove the two bottom bolts
for the timing cover, because these bolts screw into the front face of
the bearing cap.  The toughest part comes when you start to pull down on
the front main bearing cap.  It is located generally over the front
suspension cross member, making it a bit hard to get at to pull it
straight down.  You might ask Bill Eastman.  I think he went through this
just recently.
