I think the phenomenon you described is typical, although probably
not to the extent that's showing on your gauge. My wife's car also
shows increasingly hotter for a few minutes after the car is turned
off. I think it has something to do with the fact that the engine's
heat is still being transferred to the coolant after the engine is
shut off, but the water is no longer circulating, so "hot spots"
develop in the coolant system. Hers always cools off in a minute or
so after re-starting the engine.
