Rick -
        Check closer - the cannisters on my '79B aren't hermetically sealed -
they just appear to be.  The bottom one inch is a threaded on cover. 
Mine opened fairly easily.  Someone here on the list suggested buying
new charcoal at an aquairum store.  I just washed mine with soapy water,
rinsed well, and dried.
