While tire size has a marked effect on "real" speed (I'm running 195/55
Dunlops on my 77 MGB) it has no effect on the registered speedometer
speed versus tachometer reading. These two readings are locked
together by the nature of the beasts. The tach measures engine
revolutions per minute and the speedometer measures (in reality)
transmission output revolutions per minute. The "speed" part of the
speedometer is a conversion done internally to the speedometer. If you
were to put 8" wheels or 38" wheels on the car the ratio of tachometer
reading to speedometer reading would be the same (assuming you could
get it to roll in either case). The "real" speeds in these two cases would
be vastly different.
