Dear all.
Not especially good news today - the rumbling in the depths of the engine
of my 72 is every bit as much the evil portent as i feared it would
be.......to whit....
The engine is basically knackered!
I have been mulling over the alternatives.
a)have it rebuilt
b)swap engines with the 69 (while the 69 gets restored)
c)find a used one to replace it
pros and cons
a) is expensive - $2-3000 of anyones money and whilst i love the car
dearly it will always be just what it is - a fair, amateur restoration
that is going to need major bodywork in a year or two - sort of a "silk
purse syndrome" - however - once done the car will be in tip top running
condition - probably for many years.
b) is cheaper initially but really only puts the problem off a few months
- at the end of the day, three cars need three engines and since the one
in the 69 is a fully rebuilt unit and i am hoping to make this car a bit
of a bobby dazzler the two should probably stay together!
c) probably cheapest in the long run but presents "the fear of the
unknown" - I looked in bargain news this evening - there are several B
engines - a 68 for $150, a 72 for $200 (incl trans) and a 74 for $50
they all sound WAY too cheap to be any use - and how the hell would one
know?
I dont need any more parts engines!(still getting flak over the ones i
have!!)
Bearing in mind that i am rudimentally mechanical at best and do not have
the tools/time/space to do major transplants - here, at long last, are
the questions i pose
1)Anybody know of / want to sell a reliable engine within 200 miles of
NY/CT?
2)Never having looked at complete units before, is there a decent engine
rebuilder that stocks them? - any idea how much?
3)Any other ideas?
dazed and confused
