I've read lately with great interest of the MGF sighting in Michigan. Well,
for another nine months or so you may be able to get a regular MGF sighting
in the Virginia Beach area of Virginia. Our local MG club (Tidewater MG
Classics) is lucky enough to have a NATO Officer from England as one of its
members. His assignment here in America allows him to import a personal car
for up to a year without having to meet our federal regulations. Well, he's
been to several meetings where the car receives the bulk of our attention.
Last month during our annual chili cookoff we were lucky enough to have it
parked next to a TC, TD, Magnette, Y-Type, N-Type vintage racer, B, and A
coupe. It really gave some perspective to the development of the MG over
the years. Because of the owner's work schedule we have little way of
knowing which event he'll attend, but we hope to pin him down for a tech
session or barbecue this summer. If so, I'll let the list know so anyone
with the urge can stop by to take a look.
My personal reaction to this car was that it's engineering and styling
pleasantly surprised me. Don't plan on stretching out or packing very much
for a long trip, but it's a tight little sports car in the MG tradition.
The car we see is red with red and grey seats and interior. Rather than a
throwback to past styling like the Miata, the MGF is a departure that looks
like one modern, unique and quick sports car. If I lived where one was
available (and had the cash!) I'd buy one in a second. The only drawback
seems to be that unlike my B, if you want to do any serious service work it
looks like the engine would have to be dropped down. The engine and various
other mechanicals are wedged into some amazingly tight spaces.
