I just checked my pockets and still have 2 cents so I thought I'd better
add my part. When thinking about wear, don't discount the amount of
torque applied to the wheel under breaking/braking/stopping.
A huge amount of energy is absorbed to bring a car and your butt to a
stop. For years this twisting action is trying to scrub the splines off
your hubs and wheels. Add turning and acceleration and you can begin to
see how much force is at work.
Those are really little splines. I'm sure that they will last 15 years
with normal use. But all of our cars are over 15 years old!
So what's the consensus on how tight to tighten the knock-offs?
I'm with the camp that says you can't tighten them too tight. I read
somewhere that it is the (extreme) pressure of the knock-off on the
wheel that keeps the splines from premature wear.
