Timing:  I've always removed the plugs, and then just turned the fan
while pressing down on the belt with the other hand.  If you're careful,
or you have one of the steel fans, you won't damage the fan.  For this
to work, you have to press on the side of the belt that you are turning
towards: for clockwise, press down on the belt to the right of the
fan pulley.  For counter-clockwise, press on the left side.  Unless
you live below the equator in which case everything is backwards and
upside-down.
  If you have an electric fan, you just spin the fan REALLY fast until
you generate enough electricity that the generator acts as a motor and
turns the engine for you.
