Well, I remember staying at a Bed and Breakfast in London in the late
'70s. A beautiful Finnish lass who was a student at London University
and worked at the Bed and Breakfast told me that her alarm clock had
stopped operating and asked if I would mind knocking her up the next
morning. The expression on my face and the stammering from me was
priceless, according to the other American guy who was there. (Equate
knocking up with ringing up - to place a call via the phone!)
