I also had this problem, and you probably will not like
the answer, but here is what I did.. I attached a small
cutting disk to my dremel and cut a notch in them all
the way through on one side. Then, using a screwdriver
to spread them apart I was able to get them off. It looked
like the water and the metal had caused the threads to
somehow bond to the nut. Needless to say, they would
not screw back on, and the threads on the shaft were
pretty shot as well. I cleaned up the threads on the
nuts as best as possible, carefully tightened them
up as much as possible, and then put a (gasp :o )
zip tie to hold them on.
