The heater has a wet part, through which the engine coolant flows, and a
dry part, through which air flows.  If your friend had pine straw, sand
and such in the wet part, he had serious problems.  The wet part can
become clogged with sludge if not properly maintained, but unclogging it
will not increase the airflow.  It will improve the transfer of heat. 
For better airflow you need to clean the cooling fins on the heater core
in the dry part.  That is where you are likley to find the kind of junk
you were talking about.  I don't know how you get at it on an MG, but I
think a vacuum cleaner would be the appropriate tool.
