Well, I'm not quite sure how else to describe it except as a bite mark.
It looks a bit like if you had hit the aluminum case with a slowly
moving drill bit. Just a little gouge with some sharp little burrs
kicked up.

The bite was caused when the Halda came dislodged from it's windshield
mount during a rally. It was mounted by hot glueing it to a triangular
piece of metal that had four suction cups that attached to the
windshield. The suction cups were attached to the mount using screws.

This was very sturdy and worked well for several years. But one time we
were running a rally and we were way late and trying to make up a lot of
time. This was in our '88 Mazda GTX (Turbo AWD). We hit a bridge doing
about 80, got all four wheels off the ground and bottomed out on the
other side. Bam! Those screws came flying out of the mount and went
shooting around the inside of the car like bullets in a submarine. So
now this 2 pound Halda was only attached by the 2 foot long speedometer
cable and it was winging around like it was on the end of a bullwhip.
At some point the Halda came unglued from the mount and got the bite
mark on some sharp edge on the mount.

I don't remember how I finally got it under control or how we ended up
doing on that rally. I just remember the sound of those screws pinging
off the metal mount and shooting all over the car. Come to think if it,
we never did find all those screws.
