Bill,
I have been in a similar situation recently for a different reason.
The Lucas alternator I had on my '73 MGB had an internal diode for the
purpose you describe. I replaced the alternator with a larger, non Lucas and
had to add an external diode as a precaution to keep from having the same
problem you describe.
I suppose that it would be too far fetched to assume your old one had the
diode shorted out and that your new one, which is a little different doesn't
have one??!!
I'll think about this a little more.
