I posted to news.groups after these were proposed, commenting on the
apparent cluelessness of the proposer. No response. He apparently doesn't
know about any of the mailing lists or web-sites. His RFD proposals are all
identical except for a word or two. His RFD's were immediately followed
by multiple "this is a good idea" messages - from his brother. Also note
that he didn't post it to any of the appropriate mailing lists. I'd guess
this person is pretty new to the 'net.
Perhaps newsgroups are a good idea (though the idea has been vetoed
multiple times here, starting 10(!) years ago), but even if so this is not the
right proposal, IMHO. While I have been mildly in favor of a newsgroup in
the past, I recommend voting against these proposals (mg,triumph and jaguar -
note that there's no other-british-cars group proposed).

p.s. I'm not including the voting form because the voting regulations
explicitly disallow redistribution by people other than the vote-taker and
(if authorized) the proponent. Read news.announce.newgroups and vote on
the proposals from there. I'll cc the vote-taker and ask him to post the
proposal to the brit-car, triumph, mg, and jaguar mailing lists.

FIRST CALL FOR VOTES (of 2)

rec.autos.makers.mg For fans of MG cars.
Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 4 Oct 1996.

RATIONALE: rec.autos.makers.mg
There are many MG car clubs worldwide. These MG enthusiasts/buffs
derive great pleasure from driving, polishing, restoring, or just
talking about their MG cars. Each year thousands gather for
MG/British car shows. Some shows are general in scope and allow any
and all British automobiles (and motorcycles) to be displayed, while
others cater to a particular automaker's line (e.g. MG). There are
print magazines that showcase certain makes (e.g. "MG
Enthusiast"). There are also web sites such as (www.mgcars.org.uk)
that allow the MG/Brit-Car buff to keep up to date with their favorite
automaker's progress. There are, however, NO newsgroups that allow
these MG car enthusiasts to freely communicate PERSON-to-PERSON. The
newsgroup listed above would allow these people to share advice on
restoration of older models (a very popular hobby), or to talk about
new models/features, or to inform others of upcoming car shows etc. I
have found that MG car buffs are a very friendly and helpful group of
people, who are willing to "get their hands dirty" to assist a fellow
MG-Car buff with any problems. I know that the (MG) group would be an
EXTREMELY active newsgroup. I am pleading my case in the hopes that
this proposed newsgroup will be approved.
CHARTER: rec.autos.makers.mg
The aforementioned newsgroup will be a forum for discussing:
- Proper care and upkeep of the specific makes.
- Restoration advice for older models.
- Impending car shows.
- The joys of owning and driving an MG.
- Other related topics .....
END CHARTER.
