As to overtightening.
The British Police car squad had a ritualistic check procedure before a car was
taken
out for patrol. Very important yes.
One of the checks was to make sure the wheel nuts were on tight. 200lb
policeman wrenches
on the wheel nuts fine. Next patrol does the same, and so on. Result the studs
on some cars sheered.
You'll be ok if you don't keep doing it.
Like virtually every other retaining nuts the wheel nuts have a torque setting.
I seen it somewhere in a manual but can't recall it now.
