Bob:
The mounts are hard rubber, and should, in general, be fairly stiff and hard.
If they are excessively cracked, warped front-to-rear, or spongy to the
touch, they are history. They should sit more-or-less straight up and down
in the engine bay, relative to the wings. Hmm. Having a hard time describing
that. They should be perpendicular to the wings front-to-back, and canted at
about a 45 degree angle from vertical relative to the ground. That make
sense?
If motor mounts go bad, you tend to wear out transmissions and rear end gears
and U-joints faster than normal, due to excess torque by the engine when
accelerating or decelerating.
Hope that helps.
