Try placing a heat reflective mat under you driver's side carpet, 
extending up  the tranny tunnel.  This type of heat shield is avaible at 
local hot rod shops or swap meets. Cheaper at swap meets.
Another fix is to wrap the down pipe from the exhaust manifold with 
header wrap.  Down side of that is it collects oil and dirt.  I know your 
car doesn't leak oil, but the wrap does collect it from somewhere.
