Handheld Multimeters come with various current measuring capabilities.
You can adapt any voltmeter to read current by placing a low value
resistor (a fuse works well and adds a bit of saftey) in series with
the line you want to measure. Measure the resistance of the fuse then
put the fuse in the circuit and apply power. Read the voltage across
the fuse (usually millivolts range) and divide that reading buy the
resistance measurment, i.e. Volts/Resistance=Amps
