Not that anyone asked for the reason this occurs but if the Smiths MGA
gauge is like the Smiths gauge which Morgan uses the reason is in the
gauge not the sending unit. In side the gauge are two electro magnets.
One pulls the needle to full, the other is routed through the sending
unit, as the fuel level lowers the sending unit allows higher current
to flow to the magnet and it slowly overcomes the other magnet pulling
the needle to empty.
On the back of the gauge you wills see two nuts on a stud in a slotted
holes, these nuts hold the magnets in place and the slots allow
adjustment of magnets.
Now having told you something you didn't want to know I say DON"T EVER
LOOSEN THOSE NUTS !!!! I spent a week adjusting them to read right.
Just slightly off and you will experience what you have at the best to
to 4000 Miles to the gallon for 200 miles then 10 gallon to to the
mile for 2 miles.
