Two different springs are used so that the advance "curve" more closely
resemles just that a curve. If two identical springs were used the curve
would be linear. With two different springs, the curve, as plotted on a
graph, is comprised of two strainght lines. The first is the steepest. And
the second is a little less steep. Once the maximum advance has been
achieved, a third line can be added to the graph which runs horizontially.
Any good automotive book covering ignition systems will illustrate a typical
advance curve. You could also plot your own using a timing light with a dial
which allows you to zero out the light.
