Manaul transmission oil

I have been advised to use heavy-duty automatic transmission fluid in 
the manual trans on my Midget Mk1 (1275 motor).  The reason given is 
that automatic transmission fluid has to operate at higher temperatures 
and under heavier loads for longer periods of time than any manual 
transmission.

Could I have advice/criticism/comments please?
