Corey, It's not clear to me how adjusting the timing can affect the mixture. Even if you achieve more complete combustion, wouldn't the gas to air ratio still remain the same and be determined by the carb? Could the available intake air be restricted? How about installing free-flow air filters to allow adjustment to a leaner mix?
