Hakan,
According to Linsay Porter's Book "Guide to Purchase and DIY Restoration;
MGBs bound for the US market have a U in the Chassis Number. 1st Numeral
G=MG, 2nd H = B series engine, 3rd N=2 seater tourer; D=GT, 4th 1 & 2=MGA,
3=1st series B, 4=2nd series 5=3rd series; 5th L=LHD; U=USA; 6th indicates
model year from '70 on, A=1970, B=1971, C=1972 and so on. Example: G-HD5UE
= MG; fitted with B series ingine; GT; 3rd Series MGB; USA 1974.
Hope this waves away a little of the fog.
Cheers,
