FWIW here is some actual testing done for lead substitutes. It was done
by a guy at work here who rates ones manhood by the HP that he has. The
Mercury fuel additive he describes IS NOT the metal found in your
temperature gage bulbs but a product that is sold by Mercury Marine for
boat engines.

        An engine without hardend valve seats was run under heavy load (1100 hp 
and 850 Ft-Lb). This engine was for use in a Pro Street 68 vette. the engine 
was dyno tuned for 4 hours prior to being installed in the car. I was told that 
the car was driven for the summer of 95 on the street and raced every weekend. 
The heads were recently removed with no evidence of valve seat errosion. The 
mercury fuel additive was used.
