Graham- Licence plate requirements vary in the US state to state.  
In Michigan, where most U.S. cars are designed and/or built, front 
plates are not required, and haven't been for over 10 years.  I know 
they are in Illinois, and some other states as well.  I haven't 
noticed the lack of plates on most cars, even older models.  The 
lines always seem much cleaner without a plate in the way.
