Well it appears that the fuel pump is getting gas to the carbs. The
fuel pump is the usual weak link. But if further appears that the gas
is not getting from the carbs to the engine, since you were able to
start the car using starter fluid. Check the following:
- With the air cleaners off, and the suction piston damper rod off
lift the suction piston to see if it is free and no binding. If it
isn't then
- loosen the carbs dash pots and gradually tighten back
down insuring the piston is always free.
- check the needle to see if it is straight by removing
the suction piston and then the needle and roll the
needle on a flat surface to see if it is straight.
Note that it is supposed to be tappered
- center or have someone center for you the jet at the
bottom of the carb.
- If the suction piston is free and not binding and you can not smell
gas after trying to start the car:
- Your needle valve in the bowl or the fuel line at the
carb could be qummed up and in need of cleaning
- If you can smell gas after trying to start the car then do a
complete ignition check. Remember it does not take much spark to
ignite the starter fluid.
Good Luck

Thanks for those people who responded. Unfortunately, my fuel pump merily
clicks along. So I checked the fuel pipe at the carburetor and it pumps fuel
fine (into the jar after I disconnected the pipe). Sprayed some starter fuel
stuff from HI-LO into the carburetors after taking the air filters off and
the engine starts fine for a few seconds. I'm not an expert in re-building
the carburetors. I already did that about 6 months ago. Opened to find the
float ok and the needle ok (gross jet or whatever), I think !!! OPened the
dash pot and looked at the internals. No idea what it does in there but
removed the piston and inserted it again. Seemed fine ! Well after all that
still does not catch.
Still hoping !
Thanks
Sam
