Rob,
I don't use gasket sealants when working on the exhaust and intake manifolds.
In some of the shops I've worked in there was a practice of lightly using
sealant on both sides of the gasket around the intake ports. However, its
more important that all surfaces are cleaned and smooth.....free from old
gasket material, corrosion, carbon buildup or whatever else you find. It is
also critical to check the studs in the head. They take a lot of abuse from
the heat and previous owners. As a rule I go ahead and replace the studs so
that I know that I can tighten everything well without fear of snapping or
stripping a stud. Always use new gaskets with the above instructions and
everything will seal nicely and stay that way for a long time.
Regards,
Randy
