Robert Zirpolo was enquiring about the location of the flasher relay -
if the 72 is like the 71, it's located on the firewall in the passenger
footwell. The flashers are (for reasons known only to Lucas) wired
throught the hazard warning switch - lack of flashers may indicate a
problem here as well as the flasher relay. The hazard warning switch
and relay are in the console, and you'll need to pull the console to get
to it. You can replace the flasher relay with a heavy duty relay
(typically *gold* coloured) from your local auto store.
Jim Mellander asked about the starter solenoid. If you pull the starter
motor (fairly easy if attacked from both above and below, no need to
jack the car up), the solenoid can be disconnected from the starter
motor and cleaned. My solenoid was sticking a couple of years ago and
it was amazing the amount of crud which had collected between the
solenoid core and coil. Energetic wire brushing cleaned everything up,
and it's been fine ever since. I believe Leyland originally had a
rubber boot which covered the entire assembly to keep out the crud,
however, finding one of those still on the car is about as likely as
finding a smog pump on a Texas MG...........
