I had some similar starter problems on my 75 Midget. What I found was a broken
ground strap between the engine and the body. Since the battery ground is
connected to the firewall without a good ground strap between the engine and
the body all sorts of funny things happen as other things such as throttle and
choke cables try and carry the starter current. The strap is located down
around the engine mounts but I can't remember which side.
