He'd probably be best off with a B box.
THe Magnette box has the clutch master cylinder mounted on top, instead of the
side, (I think it also has side mount holes) and has wider gearing, including
a lower 1st. Let me know if he *really* needs to know the Magnette gear
ratios. The shifter may be a little different.
An A or Early B box will probably be the easiest swap. The A and early B box
have a non-syncro 1st, and are lighter than the later (68 and up) MGB box.
A later B box will be the easiest to find. The later B box has 4 gear syncros,
slightly different gearing, and is the strongest of the bunch. The shifter
tower was moved too.
They will all bolt up to the same engine plates, and clutches should work, as
long as you get the right disk for the tranny (Different splines on input
shaft) He'll also have to match the spigot bushing to the tranny input shaft
diameter.
