If the gearshift is the same as a TR8 one, just grind off the spot welds
holding the shaft into the base, cut off as much of the length as you want from
the non-threaded end and reinstall by either re-spot welding or just drill and
bolt the shaft to the base.

My 1970 MGB has an SD1 gearbox installed with a Rover V8 engine. The gear
stick sticks up rather high and I remember reading somewhere that it should
be cut down. Anyone have advice on this? What is the height of an MGB
stick above the tunnel face (not the console!)?
