I run a Carter AFB 625 on my V8 and haven't had a problem with auto crossing
it. My pump is putting out a static pressure of 4 to 4.5 psi. If you go
much higher than that you will start to get flooding problems under certain
conditions.

I have not had this problem before, but do not push my skylark nearly
that hard. Could it be that you are running too high of fuel pressure
for the Carter? I know that mine will flood with the current fuel pump
unless I put in a pressure regulator. The carter float and needle seat
is sensitive to this...
