As I have recently sold the Formula Vee race car (just
no time to restore it), I now have some capital to
make a few upgrades to the BV8.
A few questions:
1. What are my options for commercially available
rear ends ready to go into a B? I know about the wide
variety of do-it-yourself ways to do this. However,
due to time constraints, I want to buy a narrowed rear
with about a 3.08 or so ratio that is "ready to
install". This means correct spring mounts, correct
width, handbrake issues resolved, functional brakes
with fittings to match my MG etc. I don't want to
screw with it for a month of weekends.
I know I can get one from Jack Emery in Maine. D&D
now has an S10 rear on their site, is there anyone
else? At this point, I'm probably just going to have
Jack send me one.
2. My B currently has a 77 body with a chrome bumper
front cross member. The car still has all the stock
rubber bumper parts in the rear. However, I have
added Moss lowering blocks to the rear to match the
front. When I purchase new springs, do I purchase
chrome bumper or rubber bumper springs? I'd like to
match the chrome bumper crossmember in the front
without using the lowering blocks in the rear.
3. I'm still fighting nagging oil leaks. I'm
currently losing about a 1/2 quart every 200 miles or
so, which is too much. I don't mind the occasional
drip. I'm using 10-40 oil. There are a couple of
places that I always have oil after a drive. One is
the little pocket created by the timing cover,
directly below the distributor. There is also always
a little puddle of oil on the rear of the engine on
the valley ban gasket where the gasket hold-down is
located. Any suggestions?
For those that are interested, my rebuilt 3.9 runs and
feels great in the B. If I can fix the gearing issue,
and at least slow the oil leaks, it will be in great
shape.
