Jon,
Your engine sounds just like mine. Mine is one of those low compression
Range Rover 3.9 litres from a '91 model. This probably has the "hotwire"
injection, with a nifty looking intake with 8 little velocity stacks,
covered by a big aluminum bit with "3.9" cast into it.
Do you have all of your fuel injection? That is, complete wiring
harness, ECU, airmass sensor, etc? I wasn't lucky enough to get
a complete fuel injection system with mine. I've been able to source
some components at a reasonable cost. (Such as one junkyard that
is asking $350 for an ECU). If you are going to stick with fuel
injection, I've got a few good sources. If you aren't going to use
the fuel injection, I'm sure there are many on the list, myself *heavily*
included, that would be interested in parts.
Yes, your compression ratio is 8.13:1. If you are planning on rebuilding
this engine (how many miles does it have on it?), a simple performance
boost is to go to something other than the truck pistons that come
with the Rover.
My engine had 63k on it, and was in so-so shape. It looked like the PO
had rarely changed oil, and is in need of new pistons, cam, and bearings.
Besides scrounging local parts places, there are quite a few good
Rover and MGB V-8 specialists out there.

It's not the greatest pic, but this is my '91 Range Rover EFI
3.9 litre as removed from the Rover. Look familiar?
