I will always remember when I first drove my sisters 1952 MG TD in 1953 ( no
drivers license but who cared back then ). I started off by pulling the
lever through the gears with one continuous movement. And I got a slight
crunch going into the next gear. My sister said, don't do that, its a
one-two movement . One into neutral, two into the next gear. Always works
for me. This was on an almost new TD.
Remember, these are pre WW2 design transmissions and synchromesh hubs, so
give them a small break.
So my suggestion is, if it works with a slight hesitation, it is OK and I
would not pull the gearbox. .

Scott, Every sports car I've owned had its idiosyncries , the TD, the MGA
Coupe, the Porsche 356, the TC, now the
1934 MG NA Fourseater
1937 MG SA Tickford
1938 MG TA Roadster Special
1947 MG TC
1953 MG TD Arnolt coupe
1955 MG TF 1500
And the '84 Alfa Spider.....
They all have their quirks and you have to learn to live with them. So if
you must hesitate a little before engaging 2nd, then thats the cars
personality!! ;-)
Terry
ps, better than pulling the tranny!
