Jimmy,
You don't mention if the engine is completely cold or what the ambient 
temperature is when you are doing this.  Certainly if using the choke, 
black smoke is appropriate when starting the engine with perhaps more 
than a puff until the choke cable is pushed in.
Black smoke indicates a rich condition which is required to start a cold 
engine.  The choke allows more fuel into the mixture to enrichen it.  If 
there are no other problems. it sounds pretty normal to me.
