Cute song, but it certainly perpetuates the myth! And from within the
ranks too. For shame!
Thanks Dave for putting up your info on grounding points!
I have lived with Lucas electrics since my first car at age 17 (now 50)
and my first Triumph bike at age 19 (still have it), have owned Sprites, big
Healeys, Mgs, plus Triumph, BSA and Norton bikes, plus been a mechanic on
hundreds of others, and I still don't understand what this reputation is all
about. The vast majority of my British vehicles have been reliable in all
kinds of weather, temperature extremes, vibration, age, and neglect. Sure,
I've got a few stories, but they are few and far between considering the
mileage and years. But I think Lucas could even be called "great"!
I've even listened to a few other "good" mechanics (who's strong point
was NOT electrical) make disparaging remarks about Lucas, but it has always
been that they didn't understand the problem, not that components were bad.
They also didn't like Marrelli or other Italian electrics. Hmm... I wonder!
Not that I know everything about these things, but the way owners and
yes, sometimes even mechanics, tear into things and call them junk is crazy!
It reminds me of mechanics that don't like SU or Amal carbs simply because
there are two or more of them. Also very reliable.
I guess it's easier to poke fun at things than understand them.
