I'm having a problem with the electrical system in my 1953 MGTD that I
can't quite understand. When the car works normally, right after
starting I'll see a significant positive indication on the ammeter while
the battery recharges (assuming of course the rpm's are high enough).
Sometimes, though, nothing happens--the meter just stays at zero. Then
within 5 or 10 minutes something will kick in and it will start reading
positive again like it should. Once it starts working it stays working
for the rest of the drive, thus so far this has not caused any actual
problem since it always starts working eventually and by time I get home
again the battery is charged.

Obviously, though, something is wrong...I'm guessing something is
sticking until either heat or vibration loosens it. I tried cleaning the
contacts in the voltage regulator last night but that seemed to have no
effect. The shop manual only seems to talk about adjustments with
nothing on diagnosing problems. I haven't actually checked yet, but I
don't think it needs adjusting since once it kicks in it seems to work
fine.

Any ideas?
