I have identical altos on the Cooper S and the Victor TF (MGB-based). With
both of these, this symptom so far has indicated that a diode in the bridge
has deteriorated. In the Mini, this diminished the charging so much I had
to replace the alto, but the one in the Victor has been glowing for two
years and still charges nicely.
