Clutch Cable Lubrication Question

I recently converted my early TD from clutch rod back to the original clutch
cable. It seems to me that the cable could benefit from periodic
lubrication. (In fact, I don't see how it could survive where it is without
lubrication.) How would one lube the cable? Will oil penetrate the sheath?
