Hi Bill,
Yes you can adjust the play in the rack by taking the shims from under the 
adjusting nut. What this does is to push the rack teeth further into mesh 
with the pinion. However it must be remembered that racks almost always wear 
in the centre and if you carry out this adjusting operation in the centre 
you will probably find things locking up at the ends ( full lock ).
There is a proceedure for doing this detailed in the Manual, if you cannot 
access it let me know.
Another source of wear is the ball joints at each end of the rack and you 
can inspect these by removing the rubber bellows.
If you are not experiencing problems with your steering I would leave things 
untouched.
