I tried the Permatex #2 on the fiber washers and it worked like a charm. 
Hopefully the coating was thin enough that nothing squished out. This is a 
great relief as I'm sure I was pushing my luck by trying to stop the leak 
with more and more torque! (Of course some future owner will curse me for 
putting that black s**t on the banjos. Permatex claims it doesn't harden but 
wait about 30 years.)
