Thanks for explaining the "colored smoke" that I saw, Lew (and thank you, Bob, for your reply to my note).

One point that neither of you addressed (if I may be so bold as to criticize!) is whether, in fact, I really need to anneal my external pipes. How likely are they to crack if I don't do anything to them? Will polishing them by hand really aggravate the problem and make them subject to failure? Part of me would like to ignore Mike Allison's warning (after all, he is adamant that PA engines should be red, not green!) but another part of me is worried that I could suffer a major engine let-down if I use the pipes as they are and then have one break while I'm out driving ...

TIA,

Lawrie

And the fumes seen coming off the pipe when annealing is likely to be oil
being burned off the inside which was embedded in the copper. I agree with
Bob that annealing to even a cherry red will not melt the silver solder (?).

Lawrie,

Many years ago, before people like Barry Foster started making
replacement pipes for MMM cars, I decided to make some myself. All I
had to do was unsolder the end fittings and replace the copper pipe -
right ? Wrong !! I have no idea what was used to attach the fittings
to the pipes but it was not silver solder or ordinary braze, it was
something with a much higher melting point. I ended up sawing the end
fittings off, drilling the copper out of the fitting and brazing new
pipes on.

Heating your pipes to cherry red to anneal them is NOT going to
loosen the end fittings if the factory put them on !

Cheers, "Bob".
