Hi Lawrie,

I have used Castrol GP50 (now no longer available in Australia) in my PA
gearbox. Based on it being discontinued I investigated what else I could
use. The following is what I have discovered so far based on my own
investigation of this issue.

Oil should be (based on original spec) a 140 weight oil. However I am also
a firm believer that there are many modern products (into which synthetic
oils fall) that do a much better job than their earlier counterparts.

Oil will EP additives should be carefully investigated. EP additives in the
past have been corrosive to copper and its alloys ie Brass, Bronze etc.
However some more modern EP additives are NOT corrosive. Need to check with
individual manufacturer on their EP additives to make sure.

Subsequently I ran my PA gear box on Millers Green Gear Oil 140 from the
Millers Classic Range for about 12 months. Please see this web-link
www.millersoils.net. It is probably closest to an original 140 weight oil
as you can get.

I do regular oil analysis on both gearbox and engine and am always looking
to minimise wear and tear in both. I don't particularly care how much the
oil costs or how often I have to change it. As such I am always on the
lookout for new products to try hence looked at Redline (based on
recommendation of racing friend).

So I have recently (mid March) changed to Redline Lightweight Shockproof
Gear Oil. I can report like Dick that the gear selection is somewhat
smoother using a Redline product but beyond that it is too early for me to
comment on its effectiveness. I think Dick's Redline 75-140 NS gear lube
should be OK as well.

The Shockproof is a really brilliant blue in colour, so beware any leaks
should be obvious.

If this has been discussed before, my apologies - I missed that thread.

Having just completed the overhaul of my PA gearbox, my thoughts turned to
the oil to be used therein. My trusty Blower's manual tells me I should use
"Duckham's Gear Oil N" but my local Duckham's dealer seems to have gone out
of business (!) Any recommendations as to what would be the best modern oil
to use? Any comments on synthetics? I've used Redline oils in MGA and MGB
gearboxes, to good effect, and I used Redline assembly lube in the PA box,
so a Redline equivalent of Duckham's N might be a good idea?

TIA

Lawrie Alexander
