Terry, FWIW, the "shifter tower" as you call it, on J Types did not have a reverse lock out, and in my experience never needed it. If you fail to repair your broken hinge point may I suggest that you use a stronger spring in the tower to make it more difficult to select reverse inadvertently? It will take a maximum of 10 minutes to do and cost about 15 cents.
