Don,

Can you tell if this solenoid was ever connected - like if there are original
cut off wires still in terminals? The P-type book sayeth the NS is permanently
deflected while the OS goes out whilst dipping. Further, there's nothing in
the wiring diagram like there is for the TAs and TBs - which DO dip. Further,
there's no wiring provision in any new wire harnesses that I've seen (although
I haven't bought one recently). And one more further, I don't think there's a
provision in the control box - that I'm aware of, to wire the NS & OS lamps
together. The TAs and TBs have all this.

Having said all that, I certainly have seen a number of Ps with dipping
refelctors. My PB has one but it's not wired due to the above reasons and it
looked as though it never was wired. I spotted a very nice pair of L140
reflectors and rims 2 years ago at Beaulieu. One was dipping the other was non
dip. I was surprised when the stall holder told me they were from his PB which
had been in the family since new. He removed them (please apply your gag
deflectors here) to install semi-sealed beams with those reduction rims. BTW,
I have MANY pairs of these rims if anybody's interested. I bought the rims and
reflectors he was selling.

One more question... can you see the very small date stamped on the outer edge
of the h'lamp shell? It gets covered when the rim is installed. I don't know
your serial number and I'm too lazy to look it up so I can't guess the build
date, but I would guess the date stamping on the h'lamp shells would be around
6 34. If it's several months earlier than your car build date then they could
certainly be original units. Or if you got them second hand they probably have
later dates. But they almost always have dates and they are stamped in the
same place, same date, if they are a matched set to the car.

And while I'm on a roll here, spouting my opinions, here's one more. Lew
inquired on the UK MMM website about the P-type distributors using a simple
clamp or a micro adjuster... I've seen several Ps with micro adjusters and
see no reason to remove one if it's there. My PB has had one since I got the
car. Original engine and stamped date looks correct to be original
distributor. I don't know when they were first used but I've NEVER seen one
on a J2 period car.

So perhaps it's time for a Lew Palmer survey again. Dipping lights and/or
micro adjusters.

  Hi Tom,

I think I've got a set of mismatched lights. Lens are correct and match but
"innards" don't. One seems to be the type that moves (via a magnet) to dip
which I don't believe is correct for P types.

Is there anyone out there who deals in lights and might repair/swap with
me?

  Thanks,

  Don B.
