Bill, I always leave the ring off if there is one, on MMM &Wolseley cars.
Reason?
a) if the ring catches at the bottom you have at best an un wanted job,
b)you could need to rebuild it again.
A bit of extra oil consumption is o/k less scraping of the oil from the bores
leads to extra bore life. Pays yer money, take yer choice.
