Bill,

Four ring split skirt pistons are anything but correct for a J2. If you have
the time and patience to experiment a little, I would remove the botton
scraper rings and see how well it runs on the three rings. It'll probably
smoke a bit and burn oil. If that's not acceptable then you'll need to
replace the pistons with a three ring variety without the split skirt. I
would recommend the racing pistons sold by Sports & Vintage Motors.

If you don't have the time to experiment then go for the new pistons from
the start. However, they are not cheap!
